Palmetto Center for the Arts Hosts Preview of Hairspray at Workshop Theatre

COLUMBIA, S.C.- The Palmetto Center for the Arts (PCA) Theatre Department will host the first public performance of Workshop Theatre’s production of Hairspray on Wednesday May 18, 2011 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets for the performance may be purchased at a reduced rate of $15 for students and $20 for adults by visiting www.districtauditorium.org or by calling (803) 699-2800 ext 79833. The performance will be held at Workshop Theatre in downtown Columbia.

PCA Theatre at Richland Northeast High School has been selected for a fifth time as one of the schools to represent the United States at the 2011 American High School Theatre festival in Edinburgh, Scotland and all proceeds from the May 18th performance will go to helping the troupe to perform at the event. The theatre program was nominated to attend and selected by the American High School Theatre Festival to represent South Carolina and the U.S., based on the program’s honors, history of creativity, audience appeal, community involvement and overall reputation.

“We are so humbled and honored to be invited to represent South Carolina, as the experience will provide such an extraordinary and educational opportunity for the students,” says PCA Director, Donna Wilson. “Workshop Theatre is always so supportive of artistic endeavors throughout Columbia and we are excited to host the first public performance of what is sure to be a spectacular production.”

Hairspray, with music by Marc Shaimain and lyrics by Scott Whitman, won multiple Tony awards in 2003 including Best Musical. Workshop’s production will be the first professional mounting of the musical in Columbia and will feature two of PCA Theatre’s current students, Hermon Whaley and Jordan Jones as Seaweed and Little Inez, respectively.

The Palmetto Center for the Arts is recognized by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as a Creative Ticket National School of Distinction. As the Fine Arts Magnet for Richland School District Two, PCA serves students in the areas of creative writing, dance, music, theatre and visual arts.
